Anthony and Sharon Maughan
Anthony appeared in the television commercials for Nescafé instant coffee, with Sharon Maughan. The commercials followed the romantic encounters of neighbours who shared a fondness for Gold Blend/Taster's Choice® coffee. The format of the commercials created a soap opera environment which encouraged viewers to tune in for the next instalment to see whether the couple would progress beyond just sharing a cup of coffee.

In the UK the commercials were for Gold Blend® coffee. They aired for twelve episodes, from 1987 to 1993. In the US  the commercials ran for thirteen episodes, from 1990 to 1997 and were for Taster's Choice® coffee. Anthony's character was called Michael in the US ads and Matthew in the UK.

The first eleven Gold Blend® commercials were released in 1993 as a free promotional video, 'Love Over Gold'.

In February 1998, Taster's Choice ran a contest/vote to ask consumers, 'Should Sharon Maughan's character end up with Michael or with her son's father, Andrew'? The results were announced in the March 3, 1998, Soap Opera Digest and voters preferred Michael.
